Élan Academy is a free public college preparatory charter school, Élan Academy Charter School currently educates prek4 through seventh grade. We will grow one-grade level at a time to eventually educate pre-kindergarten through grade eight students in New Orleans, LA.


We are seeking a School Leader Fellow who is ready to learn, grow, and develop as an expert leadership coach.  The selected individual will embody the mindsets and beliefs of diversity, equity, and inclusion, collaboration, continuous improvement, high standards in service of empowerment, intentionality, and personal responsibility. The School Leader fellow must be self-reflective, open to feedback, and committed to continuously improving.


Who will you work with?

The Fellow is not a mere observational learner. They will be a core member of the Leadership Team, working directly with the Head of School. The Fellow will be responsible for direct coaching of the Instructional Coaches. Fellows interact with teachers, leaders, students, and families every single day. This role reports directly to the Founder, Head of School. This person will spend one year strengthening their instructional, people management, and data-driven decision making skills through direct coaching, stretch assignments, and leadership moments. They play a critical role as a member of the school leadership team in ensuring the school hits rigorous goals for students and staff.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Instructional Leadership

       Develop a deep understanding of effective school leadership strategies at Élan; building on that knowledge to ensure consistent progress toward strategic academic, operational, and organizational goals

       Provide exemplary leadership and support to all staff to achieve outstanding performance

       Train with colleagues and school leaders, which includes regularly implementing feedback with grace and urgency in service of student achievement, a values-based school culture, a positive professional work environment, and personal leadership development

       Develop and lead regular coaching and professional development cycles aimed at increasing instructional capacity of lead teachers and teaching fellows

       Work with teachers to interpret data and create action plans for school improvement.

       Work with the Case Manager, ensure that teachers are implementing special education services in accordance with the law.

School Culture

       Support a positive scholar and staff culture/morale that reflects high expectations and a positive learning environment.

       Provide and model leadership to all staff, students, and families in establishing a joyful, structured, and achievement-oriented school culture.

       Foster consistency in academic and behavioral expectations in and out of classrooms.

       Develop strong relationships with families and students, including regular communication that creates high levels of investment in school culture and academics

       Support a culture of operational excellence across the school, collaborating with school leadership and operations team members on all aspects of school site management

Staff Management

       In collaboration with the Talent Manager, recruit and retain high performing teachers and staff

       Demonstrate a mission-first mindset to ensure all decisions and actions are rooted in ensuring that all students excel

       Develop, coach, and manage teacher performance to create a high performing team.

       Hold teachers and school staff accountable for meeting high standards for student academic and behavioral performance.

       In collaboration with instructional leaders and Élan’s executive leadership team, design and execute a successful model of professional development for school staff

       Facilitate in-service training and professional development for staff

       Work with school operations personnel to coordinate processes and systems

       Commitment to building culturally responsive learning partnerships with students, teachers and families;

       Communicate and collaborate with all internal stakeholders, community members, and future scholars, and families to build a culture focused on strong academic and social progress.


What are the requirements?


Ideal candidates will have a commitment to improving educational outcomes in traditionally underserved communities, a growth-oriented mindset, and the foundational belief that every child deserves a world-class education.

       A committed to serving Élan Academy’s students and families for at least 3 years

       Demonstrate a strong commitment to and alignment with the mission, beliefs, and values of Elan, and to going above and beyond the requirements of the job

       Be a person of high moral character and with well-developed emotional intelligence

       Have 3+ years of teaching experience with a record of high levels of student achievement and a demonstrated ability to deliver rigorous and inquiry-based instruction; progressive experience in a school leadership role preferred

       Two (2) years of leadership in an open-admissions, urban school, with experience in developing instructional expertise required (e.g., grade level chair, content/department chair, Assistant Principal, Dean of Curriculum, etc.);

       Hold exceptionally high personal standards for performance and possess an excellence reflex that constantly raises the bar

       Demonstrate a mission-first mindset to ensure all decisions and actions are rooted in ensuring that all students excel

       Demonstrate an ability to multi-task effectively and prioritize strategically and remain solution-oriented

       Have the ability to work within a fast-paced and dynamic team environment where responsibility for student success is shared and owned by everyone

       Strong communications skills with multiple stakeholders including teachers, students, families, and colleagues;

       Training with colleagues and school leaders, which includes regularly implementing feedback with grace and urgency in service of student achievement, a values-based school culture, a positive professional work environment, and personal leadership development

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.

Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
