ROLE SUMMARY

Alpha is seeking an entrepreneurial College Counselor who will thrive in a dynamic startup environment. Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School opened in 2015 and we are looking for a College Counselor to develop and run a successful college readiness program for our first cohort of seniors. The College Counselor will effectively advise and collaborate with all students and families in adequately preparing students for college/post-secondary options and the financial aid process. The 2017-2018 school year is the founding class’ Senior year. The person in this role will continue to develop a strong college readiness program alongside another College Counselor, but will specialize in developing strong systems to support students and families to complete their financial aid paperwork in a high quality fashion.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • P.P.S. Credential or Master’s Degree in School Counseling or other related advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in a K-12 environment or college advising preferred
  • Spanish proficiency preferred

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development

  • Co-create a four-year College Advising playbook
  • Develop a system that ensures students and families are supported through the financial aid application process

 

College + Career Advising

  • Advise students and families on all matters relating to the financial aid process, including support with scholarships and income tax document issues
  • Support seniors to complete all financial aid forms including FAFSA, CSS Profile, and scholarships
  • Help facilitate conversations between families and college financial aid offices
  • Create and facilitate workshops on financial literacy and other college readiness workshops across all grade levels (9-12)
  • Advise students around creation of college lists and best fit and match options in order to establish educational and career plans for students
  • Support students through the application process including but not limited to the CSU, UC and Common Application systems
  • Guide students with vocational interests through research and the application process
  • Help plan and facilitate visits from college admissions representatives
  • Print transcripts as necessary and send final senior transcripts to colleges/universities
  • Update UC course list annually and submit new courses as needed
  • Develop academic plans for students to meet graduation and college requirements
  • Counsel students to help them overcome personal, social and academic obstacles
  • Support a visual college presence on campus
  • Consult with Principal and Senior Director of Academics in evaluating course selections for curriculum development

 

Student + Family Relationship Management

  • Serve as an advocate for students at the school and college/university financial aid and admissions offices
  • Host several family events throughout the school year to build a strong financially literate and college going culture
  • Counsels students and parents on college planning, including admission standards, entrance exams, course selection, financial aid and scholarships
  • Create and facilitate workshops geared toward families around college preparation process (a-g requirements, college application process, etc)
  • Connect students to resources within the community as appropriate
  • Facilitate parent, student, teacher conferences as needed

 

Data Management

  • Create systems and structures to capture key data:
    • Identifying trends and implement program changes and improvements
    • Systematic monitoring of student’s financial aid and college application progress towards graduation and college acceptance
    • Regular reporting on college acceptance and readiness indicators
    • Regular reporting on student financial aid application submission progress
    • Report structure to share student progress with the principal and school leadership team
