Nashville Classical is a K-8 public charter school that opened with kindergarten in August 2013. Through a classical curriculum and within an achievement-oriented culture, we educate every student for academic success and personal excellence in high school, college and life.

Located at 1310 Ordway Place, Nashville Classical is in the heart of East Nashville, home to some of the city’s most dynamic businesses, diverse neighborhoods, and high-need schools. Currently serving grades K-3, we enroll 292 scholars.  Over 60 percent of our families live below the poverty line and more than half come without basic literacy skills, including letter recognition, and the ability to write their own name. Nevertheless, we believe they will make history and be the state of Tennessee’s highest achieving children. Specifically, we think we can be the South’s first school to close the excellence gap by

  • Educating students in a racially, ethnically and economically diverse environment that still enrolls a plurality of the city’s most needy children.
  • Achieving advanced proficiency on state exams at rates only reached in the state’s wealthiest suburban schools.
  • Offering a robust specials program wherein all students study a fine art and achieve foreign language proficiency.
  • Leveraging technological solutions so that students spend more than 2 hours per day in small groups and study computer science by 8th grade.
The Position: 
The Assistant Principal of Instruction directly coaches or manages a cohort of teachers at multiple grade levels and collaborates. The API coaches teachers on daily execution, data-driven instruction, lesson internalization, and rigorous questioning. He/she is responsible for ensuring that Nashville Classical’s academic program is implemented with fidelity within and across a grade.  Under the supervision of Nashville Classical’s Principal and in collaboration with a leadership team, the API will be responsible for the achievement of approximately 150 students and the growth of 6-12 teachers. Finally, the API will lead professional development, facilitate teacher collaboration, and engage in a constant of evaluation Nashville Classical’s academic program – from plan to execution.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Principal of Instruction’s duties include, but are not limited to: 

 

Data Driven Instruction

  • For each grade level lead a weekly data meeting that studies standard alignment, checks rigor, identifies gaps, and plans for reteaching.
  • On a quarterly basis, look at interim and standardized data to schedule, plan and organize groups for strategic intervention.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions by closely tracking data and achievement of scholars as a whole and within subgroups.

Teacher Observation

  • Observe classrooms on a weekly basis and identify a variety of quick fixes and high leverage action steps for teachers to implement.
  • Participate in weekly leadership walkthroughs to identify trends across the school and ensure that all instruction is implemented with fidelity across and within grade levels.
  • Connect teacher action steps and schoolwide gaps to the NCCS rubric, providing a big-picture vision of teacher development.

Coach Teachers

  • Meet one-on-one with teachers on a weekly basis to review action steps, share quick fixes, and coordinate effective practice.
  • Conduct follow-up observations to monitor implementation of action steps and observation feedback.
  • Engage teachers in rigorous reflection on their practice according to the NCCS Rubric and help teachers set big-picture professional goals.

  • Make decisions that lead a grade level execute procedures and routines with systematic fidelity, joy, rigor, and urgency.
  • Set and reinforce norms for staff culture and build a culture that leads to high staff satisfaction, retention, and growth.
