Endeavor College Prep is a transitional kindergarten through eighth grade charter school serving the historically underserved neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, and surrounding eastside communities. Endeavor opened in 2009 as a 4th-8th grade middle school and merged with Futuro Prep in 2013 to become a TK-8 school serving over 600 students.  Among our early accomplishments are a 2012 California Distinguished School Award and a #8 ranking in USC’s 2013 list of top charter schools in the state.  Our student population is 100% extraordinary, 97% Latino, 95% free/reduced lunch, 38% English Language Learners, and 14% of our students receive special education services.


Our team is made up of a highly collaborative group of teachers and staff who share a passion for closing the achievement gap. We use a co-teaching structure in elementary grades modeled after the successful Uncommon Schools and Achievement First schools on the east coast. We have high expectations for academics and discipline, and simultaneously value joy in the classroom, making learning fun for our scholars and teachers. We are moving into a beautiful, newly renovated campus in south Boyle Heights August 2017.


Position Summary

The School Counselor will maintain compliance will all guidelines regarding the assessment, reporting, and services provided to students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).  He/she will also use therapeutic skills to help students understand and deal with social, behavioral and personal problems that may be affecting particular students in the classroom.  The counselor will work with individual students, families and groups, and he/she will also function as an integral part of the special education department and the larger school team.  This role is integral in supporting staff and students toward better coping with their daily stresses while functioning in an academically rigorous environment.


Reporting

The Counselor reports to the Director of Student Support.

Specialized Qualifications

Required:

  • Candidate must possess a graduate degree in school counseling
  • Candidate must also possess a valid California school counselor credential
  • Experience working with urban middle school students and their families
  • Knowledge of applicable current special education laws and regulations
  • Experience conducting psychological assessments, writing comprehensive reports, participating in IEP meetings, and providing individual and group counseling

Preferred:

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience working with families, doing family counseling, leading parent workshops, etc.
  • Knowledge of external resources to support students and families outside of the school day/structure
  • Experience as a classroom teacher in an urban setting
  • Knowledge or experience using/implementing Second Step

Job Expectations

The School Counselor will:

  • Guide students to develop problem solving and coping skills through systematic behavior interventions
  • Help student/family gain insight into their risk factors and create an action plan to promote resilience through family/school/community collaboration
  • Create and maintain new or use existing paperwork
  • Collect information through interviews (initial intake, teacher interview forms, collaboration with outside professionals working with the student, etc.) and observations
  • Assist in developing implementation of assessing safety and following protocol in crisis situations
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling and client progress in resolving identified problems and moving toward identified goals and objectives
  • Maintain confidentiality, unless there are special circumstances, as in the case of danger to self or others
  • Seek out professional development (PD) to expand the skill set as a counselor
  • Develop PD training sessions for staff
  • Develop and maintain the school’s counseling and mental health program
